LT vs P Tires

The Simple Difference

  • P (Passenger) tires — For cars, minivans, and light SUVs. Prioritize comfort, quiet, and fuel economy.
  • LT (Light Truck) tires — For trucks, vans, and heavy SUVs. Prioritize load capacity, durability, and towing.

P-Metric Tires

Example size: P265/70R17 or 265/70R17 (without prefix)

  • Softer sidewall for comfort
  • Lighter construction
  • Better fuel economy
  • Quieter on the highway
  • Load capacity based on the load index (like 115 = 2,679 lbs)

LT Tires

Example size: LT265/70R17

  • Stiffer sidewalls for load carrying
  • Stronger internal construction
  • Higher max PSI (usually 50–80 PSI)
  • More puncture resistant
  • Rated in Load Range (C, D, E) instead of load index
  • Noisier, harsher, less fuel-efficient

Load Capacity Comparison

Same size, different construction:

  • P265/70R17 (SL): ~2,469 lbs per tire at 35 PSI
  • LT265/70R17 (Load Range E): ~3,195 lbs per tire at 80 PSI

LT tires carry 30%+ more weight — that's the whole point.

When to Use P Tires

  • Passenger cars, minivans, crossovers
  • Light SUVs that never tow or haul
  • Daily commuting
  • Comfort is a priority

When to Use LT Tires

  • Pickup trucks (especially half-ton and heavier)
  • Work vans and commercial vehicles
  • Heavy SUVs that tow
  • Regular hauling, towing, or heavy loads
  • Off-road driving with a loaded vehicle

The Common Mistake

Some people put P-metric tires on trucks because they're cheaper and ride better. This works ONLY if you never tow or haul heavy loads. As soon as you load up, the softer P tire can overheat and fail.

Can You Switch?

P → LT: Safe. You'll gain load capacity and durability. Downside: harsher ride, worse fuel economy, more noise.

LT → P: Risky. You'll lose load capacity. Only safe if the P tire's load index exceeds your vehicle's GVWR per-tire requirement with a margin. Many half-ton trucks REQUIRE LT tires for their weight rating.

What About "Euro-Metric" (No Prefix)?

Same as P-metric but standardized for European cars. Load index is usually slightly higher than US P-metric for the same size. Interchangeable in most cases.

Read Your Door Jamb Sticker

It will say something like: "P265/70R17 113S" or "LT265/70R17 Load Range E." That's your manufacturer's recommendation. If it says LT, use LT.
